HISTORY

PPM School of Management

It could be that Peter Drucker, a widely-known management expert in the world, saw Indonesia as an example when he said, “There are no ‘underdeveloped countries.’ There are only ‘undermanaged’ ones.” In the early 1970s, the Indonesian economic growth reached 7% even though there was a deficit of proficient management. Where could we get those professional managers when during that time, all the colleges in Indonesia only produced 10.000 new graduates from all science subjects, meanwhile the need for professional managers reached 30,000 people per year?

It was one of the reasons why a Jesuit priest, Dr. A.M.Kadarman, dreamed of having an institution like Harvard Business School, an educational institution capable of producing skilled and professional managers needed by Indonesia to support and keep boosting its economic growth.

In a meeting on July 3rd, 1967, a Foundation of Management Education and Coaching (PPM Foundation) was built. Multi-religious elements: Catholic (IJ Kasimo), Islam (Prof. Dr. Bahder Djohan), Protestant (Dr. A.M Tambunan) represented its founders and organizers. Dr. T.B Simatupang, who at that time served as the Chairman of the Church Council in Indonesia, became the first Chairman of the PPM Foundation. On February 19th, 1968, the Management Institution of Higher Education (PTM) was officially founded. The first Rector was Dr. A.M Kadarman. PTM was well known as an educational institution that applied strict entrance selection. For example, in 1970, out of 250 applicants, only 20 were selected.

In 1969, based on the recommendation by the Department of Education and Culture, PTM was renamed into Management College (STM). It got accredited by the Department of Education and Culture. Since its foundation, this educational institution has been orienting to get the acknowledgment from the business world that will benefit from its graduates.

In 1970, STM was renamed once more into the Institute of Management Education and Coaching (LPPM). It organized short and long-term training. In 1977, LPPM introduced its main program, namely Management Wijawiyata Program (WM). It is a 10-month non-degree program for fresh graduates. After getting 12 months of working experience, WM students can continue their studies to achieve a master’s degree. In 1985, LPPM built PPM Graduate School of Management by opening an MBA (Master of Business Administration) Program.

Along with the development of the educational degree program implementation, LPPM changed its name into PPM Institute. And during 1993, the MBA program was changed into Executive Management Master Program (MM Executive).

In 1999 the official name of the Institute of Management Education and Coaching (LPPM) was changed into PPM Management Institute. It has four strategic units, namely, Directorate of PPE (Executive Education and Development), Directorate of Consultancy (PT. Binaman Utama), Directorate of College (PPM Management College; STM PPM or PPM School of Management; PPM SoM), and Publication (PT. Binaman Pressindo).

Greetings from Dean of PPM School of Management

The history of the PPM School of Management (PPM SoM) is indeed quite long. As the oldest management and business school in Indonesia (founded in 1967), this school has become the living witness to various socio-economic and political dynamics in Indonesia. The ideals of the founder and initiator, Prof. Dr. A. Kadarman SJ, together with several of his best colleagues, was to build a modern management education center, which at that time was still very new, even among business communities.

Today thousands of alumni are scattered not only throughout the archipelago, but also in various countries. Many have reached the peak of their careers as CEO, CFO, COO, and many have become respected national entrepreneurs. Some PPM SoM alumni are even trusted to hold the top leadership in State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) and in various ministries. So what is special about PPM SoM? It is its unique philosophy and how that philosophy is translated into various actions and strategies.

The philosophy of "Path of the Leaves" has become a spirit for the STM PPM organization. The Path of the Leaves depicts novelty and transformation, the dynamics that give blessings to many. In this philosophy, life is not just about being born and mere existing, but more of creating new leaves when old ones fall. The shady leaves provide a new perspective on the horizon. PPM SoM - as a dynamic organization - interprets it by always creating and presenting novelty in the form of new types of businesses, management learning innovations that are relevant to the times, as well as developing the learning capacity of its students to become critical and creative thinkers.

On July 7, 2023, PPM SoM celebrated its 56th anniversary as a vibrant and respected management school. In the myriads of educational institutions that continue to grow in number and quality, PPM SoM continues to strive to be relevant and to become a reference for the community, contribute to the country, and ensure that the industrial and business world can still be served by 'Jalan Daun' graduates who are well-prepared annually by PPM SoM to later become one of the spearheads of the trident: Top Management in corporate, Top Consultants in the global industry, and of course, becoming a successful Top Entrepreneurs. I think that these aspirations are not too grandiose, because the ‘Path of the Road' has paved the way for its students to make it happen.

And so does the growth and development of an organization or a company. It has to grow new leaves, such as new types of business, new organization systems, new ways of service, and new resources. An organization that keeps developing needs a visionary attitude.

With that way, PPM Management keeps supporting its partners to walk through the Path of Leaves that grow and thrive to become an organization and an economic agent with nobleness and dignity.

Because living is not merely existing.

The four core values embraced by the PPM Management Institute and lived within the attitude and behavior of every individual are Pelopor (Pioneer) – Luhur (Noble) – Unggul (Excellent) – Santun (Polite) (PLUS).

PELOPOR (PIONEER) in Management means becoming an initiator and pioneer when developing science and Management practices in Indonesia.

LUHUR (NOBLE) in ambition means PPM Management is having a noble, greater, and more meaningful purpose, that is, the nation’s development of Indonesia.

UNGGUL (EXCELLENT) in the expertise means individuals of PPM Management attempt to contribute better for the development of the nation.

SANTUN (POLITE) in every attitude and behavior means respecting all stakeholders as an embodiment of a self-character.
